ROBIN RICHARDS HAGA

Leaving his penchant for indie-pop firmly in the past, Dutch Uncles songwriter-turned-neo-classical composer Robin Richards has revealed a stunning snippet from The Earth Asleep, a new feature film about about the 2011 Japan tsunami. Dedicated to Masahiko Haga, who runs the Kirikirikoku community group working with young people and orphans in Otsuchi, Japan (which was affected badly by the disaster), 'Haga' is beautifully intricate piece of music with a distinctive Japanese flavour. Featuring Chris Illingworth from GoGo Penguin on piano and Michael Spearman from Everything Everything on drums, 'Haga' is an accomplished arrangement that masters the art of of sonic texturing. Smooth strings are set against jumpy drum parts as authentic xylophone hits pay homage to the Otsuchi neighbourhood music - "a melody played over theloudspeakers used for earthquake and tsunami warning, heard every few hours across the whole town". Capturing darkness and light in equal measure, the looped accompanying visuals by Clara Casian demonstrate Haga's meditative process of dealing with grief through his connection to fire. Robin Richard's soundtrack for The Earth Asleep will be released via Moshi Moshi offshoot PRAH later in the year. -Holly Mullineaux
